About Me
Combining experience and passion to provide the best for you and your child

I am motivated and passionate about helping individuals grow and reach their goals by identifying and building on each student's unique personal strengths.
With more than 15 years of experience teaching both in the classroom and one-on-one settings, I provide academic and social-emotional support to students with a variety of learning differences.

Tutoring and teaching small classes are my passion as they allow me to tailor learning to the individual and provide children with opportunities to build confidence. I believe children should be guided to recognize their individual strengths instead of comparing themselves to others, and that they should use their interests, skills and knowledge to set learning goals, overcome challenges and build independence. I am certified in the Wilson Reading System and Wilson Fundations and have completed the Brain Gym 101 course offered by Brain Fit Academy, which allows me to do Brain Integration Therapy.
As a learning specialist, my program goes beyond basic tutoring or homework help. I offer various types of support, including multi-sensory instruction for children who need support in foundational skills, executive functioning and organization and targeted skill building in reading and writing.

I have a B.A. in Sociology from Manhattan College and an M.A. in Special Education-Learning Disabilities from American University. My professional background has been in the fields of education and sociology, where I have held many roles, including teacher, researcher, education consultant, academic coach, mindfulness coach and learning specialist. My work has included planning and teaching lessons, reading and interpreting neuropsychological testing and IEP’s to provide individualized and support, executive functioning coaching, and generally supporting students diagnosed with learning difference or other difficulties.

A Passion Ignited...

My passion for working with children was ignited shortly after college when I was managing a restaurant in New York City. Two boys, 9-year-old twins from the neighborhood, used to play nearby and occasionally stopped in on their way home from school. As I got to know them, I realized I enjoyed making a positive connection with them and kids in general, supporting them to build self-confidence and pride. At the end of the day, I believe we all felt rewarded.

Having gained an awareness of my enjoyment and desire to help children succeed, I secured an internship at the Lab School of Washington, which focused on students K-12 with mild to moderate learning disabilities. The experience confirmed my desire to teach children with learning challenges. After a year in the classroom at the Lab School, I applied for the Master’s program in Special Education, specializing in Learning Disabilities at American University.
As a child, I struggled in school with both reading comprehension and math. These experiences have given me more character, resilience and determination than I thought possible. As time went on, I found a job that inspires me each and every day. Having a first-hand understanding of why children choose to hide their struggles allows me to extend sincere compassion to my students while working with them to help them develop the skills they will need to overcome their challenges and to ultimately succeed and thrive in life.
